YOUR DEMOLITION AND ASBESTOS PARTNER

How is asbestos removed and why is removal important?

Asbestos is a group of natural minerals which are resistant to heat and corrosion. This toxic substance is widely found in homes and buildings. In fact, thousands of buildings contain asbestos. If you breathe in asbestos, you are at risk of a range of harmful diseases, two examples are mesothelioma and lung cancer. This is why it is important to remove the substance from your home or building.

How is asbestos removed?

Strict protocols must be followed when removing asbestos. Firstly, the entire area needs to be cleared to avoid contamination of furniture and household items. For anything that cannot be removed, such as walls, fireplaces and floors, a thick polythene sheeting needs to be placed to cover everything for protection. Then the building needs to be emptied of anyone not conducting the removal.

To avoid contamination and the spread of the substance, an alert sign needs to be put up to warn potential people from entering the building. The health risks which could be imposed need to be made clear to any potential entrees. Anyone who is conducting the removal or entering the area must wear respirators when they are in the containment area.

As well as this, whenever in the containment area, it is vital that the person wears rubber gloves, boots, and protective eye goggles for safety. On top of this, they need to be covered entirely from top to bottom.

Asbestos fibres are microscopic, so when disturbed they may become airborne which could result in you breathing them in. If you are considering removing asbestos from a building, it is essential that you seek professional help. These procedures can disturb the asbestos and spread dangerous diseases if not removed appropriately.

Even though there are no laws about removing asbestos yourself, you shouldn’t attempt to remove it without the help of professionals.
